Plot Summary:The President takes a hard stance toward China. Raymond believes Frank will support him, but Frank instead stirs up trouble behind the scenes, deepening the President's distrust of Raymond while also escalating his personal feud with Raymond. Meanwhile, Frank practices baseball in the garden, preparing for the upcoming ceremonial opening game. Rachel has been increasingly contacting the outside world, driven to desperation, but Doug finds her and stops her actions. After Lucas is imprisoned, he attempts to confront the system in court, though the situation looks grim. Editor Tom Hammerstein visits Lucas hoping to help, but Lucas is unprepared for the harsh reality of prison life. Doug continues to monitor everything—watching Tom while pushing to convict Lucas quickly, denying parole to solidify his guilt. Frank calls on Tom, using both pressure and incentives, urging him to reconsider publishing damaging articles about himself—but clearly, Frank already has everything under control. When the President proposes a policy, Raymond does not back it, giving Frank the perfect opportunity to whisper doubts into the President’s ear, widening the rift between them. The President still holds onto Raymond, but Frank knows that if he can just keep the President distracted for two more minutes, Raymond could regain favor. Thus, Frank must act to prevent this. His conflict with Raymond intensifies as Frank offers only one option: accept a stipend or deal with the Federal Energy Commission. Raymond suspects Frank is sabotaging the summit and even trying to bring down the President, but Frank admits he is merely protecting the President from Raymond’s threat. During the baseball opening ceremony, as Frank prepares to throw the first pitch, the entire stadium suddenly goes dark—Raymond’s doing. The President is furious, and Frank seizes the moment to push for the revocation of Raymond’s factory rights. Frank gets what he wants. Zoe’s death in the subway: In the dead of night, Doug meets Frank and informs him that Jenning and Zoe have been investigating Peter’s death and have traced it to Rachel. He asks Frank what to do with Zoe. Frank replies calmly that he’ll handle it. Zoe feels anxious and insecure during intimacy. Frank approaches Jackie, asking about her future plans and whether she wants to enter leadership. He aims to recruit her as his successor, win her loyalty, promise arms deals, and make her whipmaster—ensuring his path to vice presidency remains clear. To persuade her, Frank shows her confidential files from Weber and Buckworth about Jackie. Zoe goes to Rachel’s workplace to talk, only to find she has quit. After persistent efforts, the supervisor finally reveals Rachel’s email address. Unknown to Zoe, Doug had earlier visited Rachel’s restaurant and told her to resign immediately. Frank has prepared disposable phones and other tools to erase Zoe. Doug arrives at Rachel’s residence to check if she’s ready to leave, but Rachel suddenly pulls out a knife, declaring she won’t run anymore. Doug swiftly overpowers her, forces her into the car, and drives away. During security preparations, Frank insists Edward Meecham be included in the security team. Meanwhile, Zoe secretly investigates Frank. In the park, she confronts him directly, provoking Frank to fury. For Frank’s first award as Vice President, his wife must attend. But Claire learns one recipient is her former college classmate—a man who once raped her. She refuses to go, but Frank insists the event is too important, so she reluctantly agrees. At the subway station, Zoe talks to Frank in disguise. She never intends to give up her investigation. Finally, Frank loses patience and pushes her off the platform. Zoe dies. It happens to be Frank’s birthday. He extinguishes the birthday candle Claire lit for him. Claire gently touches his hand.
